ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

¬	Miss Gariasi Dutta has been allowed to render voluntary service to the cancer patients of BBCI for three days a week w.e.f. 02.06.2003. Miss Dutta completed her Masters in Social Work with specialization in medical and psychiatric work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. Psychological counseling is an integral part of comprehensive cancer treatment care.
¬	Dr. Simi Bhatia from Mumbai delivered a guest lecture on 'Flow Cytometry in the diagnosis of leukaemia' at BBCI on 10.05.2003.
¬	Art of Living Foundation, a Guwahati Branch NGO conducted a short training course for cancer patients and their relatives at BBCI for three days from 15.05.2003 to 17.05.2003. It was preceded by an interactive session on 11.05.2003. The objective of the training was to alleviate the tension/depression associated with cancer and to teach the patients about the positive attitude towards life.
¬	Dr. Tapas Maji, Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute delivered a guest lecture at the Institute on "HDR Brachytherapy in Head & Neck Cancer" on 12.06.2003
¬	Dr. C. Bhuyan, Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology will present a paper at an international conference at Cairo, Egypt and Dubai in the month of October'2003.
¬	Dr. B. K. Choudhury, Senior Consultant, Department of Radio-diagnosis presented a paper at 10th International Conference on Lung Cancer held at Vancouver, Canada, on August 10th - 14th , 2003. He was awarded Developing Nations International Travels Award for his paper.
¬	Dr. B. K. Das and Dr. R. J. Das received 2 weeks training in Video Endoscopy w.e.f. 30.06.2003 at Kolkata.
¬	Dr. J. Dev Sarma, Sr.Consultant Pathologist will attend International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) course on Cancer Epidemiology - Principles and Methods to be held at Trivandrum, India, September 1 - 12, 2003.
¬	Dr.Biswajyoti Hazarika , Senior Resident, ENT, has presented a paper titled "Local Flaps in Head and Neck Surgery" at 3rd National Conference, Foundation of Head and Neck Oncology at New Delhi on 04.10.03.
¬	Dr.Rajjyoti Das, Senior Resident, ENT, has presented a paper titled "Surgery for Larynx and Laryngopharyngeal Cancer" at 3rd National Conference, Foundation of Head and Neck Oncology at New Delhi from 02.10.03. to 05.10.03
¬	Dr.Rajjyoti Das, Senior Resident, ENT, has presented a paper titled "Surgery for Larynx and Laryngopharyngeal Cancer" at the 16th Annual Conference of North East Branch of Association of Otolaryngologist of India, 2003 held at Guwahati and has been awarded the "S.Kumar Award" for the paper.
¬	Dr.Tasmin Rahman, Senior Resident, ENT, has presented a paper titled "Secondary Neck Node of Unknown Primary - The BBCI Experience" at 3rd National Conference, Foundation of Head and Neck Oncology at New Delhi from 02.10.03. to 05.10.03.

¬	Dr.K.Ahmed, Chief Consultant, Head and Neck Surgery attended 3rd National Conference, Foundation of Head and Neck Oncology at New Delhi from 02.10.03. to 05.10.03 as National Faculty member.
¬	Dr.Sunita Agarwal, Senior Resident, Pathology, presented a paper titled "Retrospective Evaluation of FNAC in Lymphadenopathy" on 20.09.03. at Silver Jubilee Conference of NERC of IAPM at RIMS, Imphal on 20.09.03.
¬	Dr.Suresh Kumar, Director, Institute of Palliative Medicine, Calicut, Kerala, delivered talk on "Towards better Management of Our Patient: Lessons from Palliative Medicine" on 01.11.03.
¬	Dr.J.Purkayastha, Senior Resident, Surgical Oncology, attended and presented a paper titled "Thoraco-abdominal flap cover for large post mastectomy defects" in the XIVth Annual Conference of the Associations of Surgeons of Assam (ASACON 2003) held at Silchar, Assam from 1st to 2nd November, 2003.
¬	Mrs.Val Hulkin, from United Kingdom, visited the Pain and Palliative Care Clinic, of BBCI, on 07.11.03.
¬	Dr.Ashok M Shenoy, MS, FRCS, Prof. & Head of the deptt., Head and Neck Surgery, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore delivered a talk on "Parotid Tumors" on 13.11.03. at BBCI.
¬	Mrs.P.Shenoy, Speech and Swallowing Pathologist, Bangalore delivered a talk on "Quality of Life After Major Surgery" on 13.11.03. at BBCI.

¬	Dr. C. Bhuyan, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, BBCI, participated in the 'Symposium in the management of Lung Cancer' in Imphal on 24th January, 2004.
¬	Dr. C. Bhuyan, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, BBCI, participated in the Annual Conference of IMA AMS Calcutta Chapter on 1st February, 2004 at Kolkata and delivered a lecture on 'Lung Cancer - Indian Scenario'.
¬	Dr. B. N. Rao, Director, MNJ Cancer Institute, Hyderabad delivered a talk on 'Cancer Scenario in India' on 11.02.04.
¬	'Pain and Palliative Care' Update was held on 22.02.04. and 23.02.04. and was jointly organized by Dr.B.Borooah Cancer Institute and Guwahati Pain and Palliative Care Society. The update was attended by Dr. Robert Twycross of Oxford University.
¬	Dr.B.J.Saikia, Conultant, Medical Oncology, BBCI presented a paper on 'Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma - A Retrospective Review of 15 Patients' in a conference of SIOP at Dhaka from 26th to 28th February, 2004.
¬	Dr. Nandini Choudhury , Resident, Medical Oncology, presented a paper on Retinoblastoma in a conference of SIOP-ASIA at Dhaka from 26th to 28th February, 2004. Her paper was adjudged as the best paper in poster presentation.

PUBLICATIONS

¬	Dr.J.Purkayastha, Senior Resident, Surgical Oncology, BBCI, published a article titled 'Myocutaneous versus Thoracoabdominal flap cover for soft tissue defects following surgery for locally advanced and recurrent breast cancer' along with SVS Deo, NK Shukla and S Asthana in Journal Surgical Oncology, May 2003 ; 83 (1) : 31 - 35 .

ETHICAL COMMITTEE MEETING

¬

The first ever Ethical Committee meeting of BBCI was convened on 25th July 2003. A project "Immunodetection of poly-ADP-ribosylation(PAR) in human blood and tissue samples:Probing its use as a cancer marker" by Prof. R. N. Sharan, North Eastern Hill University, was approved for collaboration with BBCI. Another project 'Population Based Cancer Registry - Guwahati (Urban - Kamrup District)' supported by ICMR with Dr. J. Dev Sarma as Principal Investigator has been approved.

PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAMEE

	Dr.Joydeep Das, Senior Resident, Preventive Oncology, delivered a talk on "Tobacco and Cancer" in the Inter City Meet on "Cancer Prevention Awareness" on 14th November'03 at Lakhiram Saralabala Das Auditorium, Pensioner's Bhavan, Guwahati organized by Rotary Club of Guwahati East.
¬	The "School Health Programme" was started on 18th November'03 on the occasion of celebration of the foundation day of the Institute. The programme was started with participation of students from Maria's Public School, Guwahati. The students were made aware of "The Effects of Tobacco on Cancer".
¬	Dr.Joydeep Das, Senior Resident, BBCI, as a part of School Health Programme delivered talk in Don Bosco School from 8th to 10th December, 2003, on "Tobacco and its harmful effects."
¬	Dr.Joydeep Das, Senior Resident, BBCI, delivered a talk in Guwahati Refinery on 15th December,03 on "The Use of Tobacco and Its Ill Effect"
¬	Dr.Joydeep Das, Senior Resident, BBCI, as a part of School Health Programme delivered talk in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khanapara from 20th to 21st December, 2004, on "Tobacco and its harmful effects."
¬	Public Education Brochure was released by Dr. Robert Twycross of Oxford University in a brief function held in the Seminar Hall of the Institute on 22.02.04.
¬	Dr.Joydeep Das, Senior Resident, BBCI, participated in a health check-up camp in Sowalkuchi on 29.02.04. organized by Guwahati chapter of FOGCI.
¬	In line with the 'World No Tobacco Day' on 31.05.2003 a meeting was organized in the Seminar Hall of BBCI at 12-00 noon for discussion on harmful effect of tobacco on health amongst the patients and their relatives, hospital employees for a discussion on harmful effect of tobacco on health. Dr. (Ms) T. Rahman delivered a talk on 'Tobacco and Cancer' and Dr. R. J. Das spoke on 'Effects of Tobacco on Health'. As a part of this Celebration 'World No Tobacco Day', an article of Dr. B. K. Das, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncology titled "ONUS OF QUITTING SMOKING LIES ON THE SMOKER" was also published in 'The Sentinel' on 31st May 2003.
¬	Dr. B. K. Das, Senior Consultant & I/c, Department of Surgical Oncology has participated in a live phone-in-programme telecast by the Guwahati Doordarshan Kendra on 16.06.2003 at 2:30 PM. The topic of the same was 'Early Detection of Breast Cancer'. It may be mentioned that 'National Cancer Control Programme' has given lots of interest in prevention and early diagnosis of oral and tobacco related cancer, cervical and breast cancer in female.

CANCER DETECTION & AWARENESS CAMP

¬	An early detection of cancer and awareness programme was conducted at 19 Wing Air Force Campus, Borjhar under the aegis of Air Force Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) on the 19th July 2003. A total of 118 ladies were examined for early detection of breast and cervical cancer.
¬	An early detection of cancer and awareness programme was conducted on 27.09.03 at Naokata Village, Baihata Chariali .
¬	The doctors and the staff attended 'Health Melas' in nine places from 15th January to 15th February, 2004 - Mokokchung, Dimapur, Udharbandh, Tezpur, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Mangaldai and Boko.
¬	An interview of Dr.A.C.Kataki, Director, BBCI on cancer awareness was published in Assamese magazine " Swasthya Charcha" in February,04.
¬	Dr.Joydeep Das, Resident, Preventive Oncology, Dr.J.Purkaystha, Resident, Surgical Oncology and Dr. D. Barman, Resident, Gynaecology Oncology, BBCI, participated in a health check-up camp on 02.03.04. The lady employees of Guwahati refinery were made aware of breast and cervical cancer, and pap smear test was done.
¬	An cancer detection and awareness camp was conducted at Maniari Tiniali, Mirza on 27th March'04 with assistance from Eastern India Women's association.
